Description

This luxurious blanket is made from layers of discarded saris joined together by simple running stitches that produces a wonderful ripple effect. 'Kantha'means “quilt of recycled cotton saris" and is traditionally associated with the rural women of the Bengal region of India, which has a long and distinguished heritage. These expert seamstresses fold and stitch the soft cloth into an ultra-fine quilted blanket that is warm and durable. A traditional art known as 'Kantha', each blanket is created with a myriad of patterns and colors from saris of great beauty. Costume designer Jeanette Farrier travelled to India and discovered these magical textiles and women of West Bengal. Today there are two villages outside Kolkata whose livelihoods have been transformed through sewing Jeanette Farrier's Kantha blankets.

About Jeanette Farrier

Jeanette Farrier’s throws, cushion covers, baby blankets, and bed and pillow covers all have a story to tell. It begins in India, where women in Kolkata hand-stitch vintage saris from West Bengal into vibrant quilts for your home and for you. Jeanette Farrier matches each one individually, uniting diverse patterns, color-schemes, and images in a single reversible kantha piece. Indeed, every throw, sham, blanket, and cover is completely unique. Each has something remarkable to contribute to your own story.
