This luxurious blanket is made from layers of discarded saris joined together by simple running stitches that produces a wonderful ripple effect. 'Kantha'means “quilt of recycled cotton saris" and is traditionally associated with the rural women of the Bengal region of India, which has a long and distinguished heritage. These expert seamstresses fold and stitch the soft cloth into an ultrafine quilted blanket that is warm and durable. A traditional art known as 'Kantha', each blanket is created with a myriad of patterns and colors from saris of great beauty.
Costume designer Jeanette Farrier travelled to India and discovered these magical textiles and women of West Bengal. Today there are two villages outside Kolkata whose livelihoods have been transformed through sewing Jeanette Farrier's Kantha blankets.
